More Popular Dividend Growth Stocks

In my previous post, I presented a portfolio containing 31 of the most popular dividend growth stocks, based on the holdings of 20 different dividend growth portfolios.

To compile the portfolio, I simply counted the number of appearances of each stock in all portfolios and sorted them by decreasing frequency. I arbitrarily made a cutoff at 7 appearances, resulting in a portfolio of 31 stocks. Collectively, the 20 portfolios hold 205 different stocks, which means that 174 stocks were cut.

One of my readers, Passive Income Pursuit, expressed interest in seeing the rest of the stocks. At first, I wondered if there would be value in sharing such a huge list. After all, the 174 stocks are less popular than those that made it into the portfolio of 31...

Here's a frequency histogram of the appearances:

There are 126 appearances of unique stocks, so the left-most bar is cropped. I don't think listing these stocks has much value. See my 224 watch list stocks, which, in my view, are more interesting...

The gold bars in the frequency histogram represent the 31 most popular stocks, as presented in my previous post. The blue bars are the next tier of stocks, which I'm sharing in some detail in this post. These stocks appear in fewer portfolios, but that doesn't mean they're inferior stocks. In fact, there may be some hidden gems among them that only a few dividend growth bloggers have "discovered" so far.

Highlighted are the tickers of stocks I own in DivGro.

These stocks are not strictly dividend growth stocks, as they do not appear in Dave Fish's CCC list as stocks with 5 or more consecutive years of dividend increases.

As a bonus, I'm including the tickers of stocks in the right-most red bar of the frequency histogram. These are stocks that appear in only two of the 20 portfolios:
ADM, CL, CMI, DRI, ED, FDO, GSK, HAS, HRS, LTC, NUE, OKE, PBCT, PNY, PPL, PSEC, RDS.B, ROST, SBSI, SO, TEVA, TU, UHT, UTX, WM, WU

Full Disclosure: Long BBL, CAT, GD

  1. That's exactly what I was thinking, maybe there could be some rarer finds that I just haven't come across yet. There's a lot of companies that I want to own out of this group. ITW, CLX, BDX and ADP are the companies that I'd like to find in my portfolio in the future. Thanks for the updated list.

    1. Thanks for suggesting the follow-up post, Passive IncomePursuit -- I'm happy to oblige!

You were right in thinking there would be some interesting stocks with fewer appearances.

  2. Great work, round 2, DivGro. I think PIP has the right idea that there are a lot of potential investment ideas hidden in this second round of the process. Watch lists can get so long, it helps to get others investors' perspectives through their holdings.
