Options Update: July 2017

DivGro is about generating a reliable and growing dividend income stream. I invest mainly in quality dividend growth stocks with a track record of paying and regularly increasing dividends.

Since 2013 when I started DivGro, my portfolio has generated dividend income totaling about $38,000. While that's a decent chunk of change, I realized that I could boost my dividend income through options trading.

In my monthly options update, I report my options trades and provide a running tally of DivGro's options income to date.

In 2017, I'm hoping to earn $8,400 in options income. This month I added secured options income of $1,376, increasing 2017's total to $6,274. (Last month I collected only $469, so I'm very happy with this month's total!)

In July, two options expired and I sold one covered calls and seven put contracts. Additionally, I closed two options early and rolled forward three options. Following are details of all my options trades.

Assigned Options

When an option holder exercises an option, it is set to be assigned.

None of the options contracts I previously sold got assigned in July.

Expired Options

In July, two short options expired, both puts:

#081 : 2xAXP 21 Jul 2017 80.00 P :: $ 266.00 ($ -1.00)
#071 : 5xBAC 21 Jul 2017 20.00 P  :: $ 160.00 ($ -2.28)

On options expiration day, American Express (AXP) closed at $85.59 and Bank of America (BAC) closed at $23.83, respectively, so both short put options expired.

Closed Options

When an out of the money option goes further out of the money, you can close the option early and secure most of the options income.

In July, I closed two options early:

#060 : 2xQCOM 21 Jul 2017 57.50 C :: $ 579.00 ($ -122.57) → secured 79% of available income
#059 : 2xQCOM 21 Jul 2017 57.50 C:: $ 571.70
($ -121.77) → secured 79% of available income

The cost of buying back the put options is shown in parentheses. Having secured 79% of available income, I decided to close these options early and to add a total of $906.36 to my options income tally.

Rolled Options

Rolling forward options means buying back an option and selling another option with a later expiration date. You can do this to avoid options assignment for in the money options.

In July, I rolled forward the following options:

#062 :   2xPFE 15 Sep 2017 35.00 C :: $ 218.71 ($  -21.28)→ #101
#058 :   1xPFE 15 Sep 2017 35.00 C :: $ 112.00 ($  -11.09)→ #101
#101 :   3xPFE 15 Dec 2017 34.00 C :: $ 210.00 ($    -2.39)

By going to the December expiration for the covered call options on my shares of Pfizer (PFE) and dropping the strike price to $34, I managed to earn a little extra premium income. PFE is trading at $33.43 per share.

#076 :   2xLOW 21 Jul 2017 80.00 P :: $ 407.00 ($ -742.57)→ #100
#100 :   2xLOW 19 Jan 2018 75.0 P :: $ 830.00 ($     -2.59)

With Lowe's Companies (LOW) trading below the strike price of my short puts, I decided to roll them to January 2018. In the process, I lowered the strike price to $75 and earned a little extra premium income. LOW's current share price is $77.91.

Finally, I rolled forward the covered calls on my shares of General Electric (GE):

#091 :   3xGE 15 Sep 2017 33.00 C :: $   97.51 ($  -3.98)→ #099
#099 :   3xGE 18 Jun 2018 30.00 C :: $ 153.00 ($  -2.09)

Again, I collected extra premium income and decreased the strike price to $30.00, but I had to go out all the way to June 2018 to do so. GE is trading at $25.76 per share.

New Covered Calls

Selling covered calls is a way to collect extra income on stocks you already own. Since my last update, I executed one new covered call trade:

#091 : 2017-07-01: Sold to Open 3 Contracts of Option GE Sep 15 2017 33.00 C

I own 300 shares of General Electric Company (GE) at a cost basis of $31.00 per share. I'm willing to sell these shares for $33.00 on or before 15 September:

Open Date :  2017-07-01
Expiration Date :  2017-09-15    Number of Days in Trade : 76
Cost Basis :  $31.00 per shareGain at Strike Price : 6.45%

----------------------------  ----------------------------------------------------  -----------
Commission if Exercised : $0.00
Cost Basis if Exercised : $30.67Gain if Exercised : 7.58%

This covered call yields 1.05%, or 5.04% on an annualized basis. The yield on cost of my GE position is 3.10%, so I'm boosting dividend income by a factor of 1.63. If the options are exercised, I'll sell 300 shares of GE at a reduced cost basis of $30.67 per share, for capital gains of 7.58%.

For covered calls, I think an achievable goal is to double dividend income. The covered call trade on GE does not quite accomplish that goal.

New Put Contracts

Selling put options allows me to set the price I'm willing to pay for a stock I want to buy. In effect, I get paid while waiting for the share price to drop! I sold six put contracts in this period:

#092 : 2017-07-18: Sold to Open 1 Contract of Option AAPL Oct 20 2017 130.00 P

#095 : 2017-07-18: Sold to Open 1 Contract of Option TXN Jan 19 2018 75.00 P

Selling puts is riskier than selling covered calls. Generally, I like to see a dividend boost factor of 5.00 or more, unless I can buy shares at a discount of at least 10%. My put trades on DIS and WFC do not quite measure up.

Options Expiring in July

The following options expire in August, so I'll be monitoring these closely:

#096 : 2xWBA 25 Aug 2017 WBA 75.00 P :: Closed at $81.05 on 3 Aug (8.1% safety margin)
#087:  5xBAC 18 Aug 2017 BAC 22.00 P :: Closed at $24.37 on 3 Aug (10.8% safety margin)

#080 : 1xOC 18 Aug 2017 60.00 P :: Closed at $66.74 on 3 Aug (11.2% safety margin)
#068 : 2xCSCO 18 Aug 2017 31.00 P  :: Closed at $31.56 on 3 Aug (1.8% safety margin)

Cisco Sysems, Inc (CSCO) is trading just 1.8% above the $31 strike price of the put options I sold. I'll need to monitor the share prices of these underlying stocks as the expiration date approaches and take appropriate action as needed.

  1. Congrats on your success on selling options as a side income! I enjoy reading your monthly updates on these. Where are you trading to get such low commissions?

    1. Thanks for reading and commenting, Mat! I switched to Interactive Brokers last year. Their platform is very comprehensive and takes a little bit getting used to, but now that I am, I like it.

  2. I like what you did with AAPL. Your 14.5% downside protection is very defensive in a market that is arguably very frothy. And it seems you can't go wrong if you get into Apple at 128 cost basis.

    1. Agreed. Selling puts means you must be happy if assigned. I'd be very happy to buy Apple at $128. Of course, that's not likely to happen before October expiration unless the market tanks.

  4. Any thoughts on the SBUX 52.50 put. Thanks for info.

    Thank you for the updates

    1. Hi, Spock -- I'm not sure why you ask, but probably because SBUX's share price dropped quite a bit lately. With SBUX trading at $53.38, my $52.50 put is still in the money. Should the put be exercised, I'll buy 200 shares at $51.27 (due to the options premium collected). I'd be happy with that price!

    2. I should have been more clear. I have the puts at same price expiring Sept 15. I read through the results and personally think SBUX prospects are pretty good. Wanted your take on it which you already gave. Thanks.

      I have puts on MO expiring Sept 8 which I don't mind if exercised. Both stocks have fallen quite a bit.

      Best wishes.

    3. Yes, MO and SBUX dipped recently. All the best on your trades!

    1. Options are fun... wish I had more time to research and learn... I still feel like I'm wading in the kiddies pool!
