Options Update: July 2018

Welcome to another edition of my monthly options updates!

I write monthly options updates that track the options trades I make in my DivGro portfolio.

These updates serve as a status report on the open options and the obligations I have. I also report new trades and provide a running tally of DivGro's options income to date.

I sell puts on stocks I'd like to own and covered calls on stocks I already own. Occasionally, I execute more speculative options trades such as bull put spreads and other combo trades.

Before getting into the trade details, let's do a quick recap.

Recap

One of my goals in 2018 is to secure at least $12,000 in options income, a challenging goal that represents an increase of about 43% over the amount I secured in 2017.

Recall that I consider options income secured if I no longer have any obligations to fulfill. Specifically, if I close an option or if it expires, I no longer have an obligation to fulfill. Similarly, if an option is assigned, my obligation "expires" on assignment.

With increased volatility in January and February, I had to be more defensive with my options trades, costing me some of my previously secured options income. The trades pushed my secured options income down significantly from where I started in January, so my 2018 options goal now is even more challenging.

The following snapshot shows the trades I executed in July. You can see all my options trades on a new options page that automatically updates whenever I enter new trades.

In July, one option expired and I closed two options early. Also, I rolled forward three options and opened one option.

Assigned Options

When an options holder exercises an option, it is said to be assigned.

No options got assigned this month.

Expired Options

In July, the following option expired:

#1922018-06-14:-1×AAPL 20 Jul 2018 $200.00 C $ 122.00 ( $ -1.09 )

On 20 July, Apple (AAPL) closed at $190.77 per share, 4.6% below the $200 strike price of the 20 July covered call. The calls expired and I netted $120.91.

Closed Options

When an out of the money option goes further out of the money, you can close the option early and secure most of the options income.

#2062018-06-14:-20×F 18 Jan 2019 $12.00 C $ 1,383.00 ( $ -306.09 )
#1912018-06-12:-2×TPR 20 Jul 2018 $45.00 P $    140.00 ( $     -8.76 )

On 18 July, Tapestry (TPR) closed at $47.30 per share, some 5% above the $45 put strike price. With most of the options income secured, I decided to close early and net $131.24.

Similarly, Ford (F) closed at $10.07 per share on 30 July. The $12 calls expiring on 18 January 2019 were deep out of the money, so I decided to buy them back early and net $1,076.91.

Rolled Options

Rolling forward options means buying back an option and selling another option with a later expiration date. You can do this to avoid options assignment for in the money options, or to collect more options income for out of the money options.

Here are the options I rolled forward in July:

#2152018-07-26:-1×MKC 21 Sep 2018 $115.00 P $ 353.00 ( $   -0.12 )
#1902018-06-12:-1×MKC 21 Sep 2018 $100.00 P $ 185.00 ( $ -18.36 )→ #215
#2142018-07-20:-2×WSM 16 Nov 2018 $60.00 P $  717.00 ( $    0.00 )
#1882018-05-24:-2×WSM 17 Aug 2018 $47.50 P $ 240.00 ( $ -12.08 )→ #214
#2132018-07-18:-1×HSY 24 Aug 2018 $91.00 P $ 229.00 ( $   -0.62 )
#2112018-06-20:-1×HSY 20 Jul 2018 $92.00 P $ 194.00 ( $ -65.41 )→ #213

On 18 July, Hershey (HSY) closed at $91.41 per share, so my $92 put option was in the money. I decided to roll forward the option to August 2018 and simultaneously to lower the strike price to $91. In the process, I secured $128.59 in options income. The August $91 put option earned me $228.38 in options income.

On 20 July, Williams-Sonoma (WSM) closed at $61.58 per share, so the $47.50 put options were deep out of the money. I decided to roll forward these options to November 2018 and simultaneously to increase the strike price to $60. In the process, I secured $227.92 in options income and collected $717 in options income for selling the November $60 puts.

On 26 July, McCormick (MKC) closed at $118.78 per share, so the September $100 put option was deep out of the money. I decided to increase the strike price to $115. In the process, I secured $166.64 in options income and collected $352.88 in options income for selling the September $115 put.

New Covered Calls

Selling covered calls is a way to collect extra income on stocks you already own.

I didn't sell any covered calls in this period.

New Put Contracts

Selling put options allows me to set the price I'm willing to pay for a stock I want to buy. In effect, I get paid while waiting for the share price to drop!

I sold the following put contract in this period:

#2162018-07-30:-1×MGM 21 Sep 2018 $31.00 P $ 144.00 ( $ -0.79 )

#216 : 2018-07-30: Sold to Open 1 Contract of Option MGM Sep 21 2018 31.00 P

I'm willing to buy 100 shares of MGM Resorts International (MGM) for $31.00 per share on or before 21 September. MGM closed at $30.77 per share on the date of my trade:

Open Date :  2018-07-30
Expiration Date :  2018-09-21    Number of Days in Trade : 53
Price at Close :  $30.77 per shareDiscount at Strike Price : -0.75%
Strike Price :  $31.00 per share
Number of Contracts : 1Number of Shares :100
Put Premium :  $1.44 per shareOptions Income : $144.00
Commission : $0.79
Net Premium :  $1.448 per shareNet Options Income : $144.79
Options Yield :  4.71%Annualized Options Yield : 32.43%
----------------------------  ----------------------------------------------------  -----------
Commission if Exercised : $0.00
Cost Basis if Exercised : $29.57Discount if Exercised : 3.91%

This put option trade yields 4.71%, or 32.43% on an annualized basis. At $30.77 per share, MGM yields 1.56%, so I'm boosting dividend income by a factor of 20.79. If the option is exercised, I'll buy 100 shares at a cost basis of $29.57 per share, a discount of 3.91%.

For selling puts, I like to see a dividend boost factor of 5.00 or more unless I can buy shares at a discount of at least 10%.

The MGM options trade easily qualifies with a boost factor of 20.79.

Options Expiring Soon

I look forward to expiring options, hopefully allowing me to secure more options income. Of course, for in the money options, I have decisions to make before the expiration date.

The following options expire next month:

September:

#2162018-07-30:-1×MGM 21 Sep 2018 $31.00 P $ 144.00 ( $ -0.79 ) → Deep in the money (8%)
#2152018-07-26:-1×MKC 21 Sep 2018 $115.00 P $ 353.00 ( $ -0.12 )→ Out of the money with a  10% safety margin

MGM missed earnings and the stock took a tumble, so the September $31 options is deep in the money. I'll have to monitor this option as the expiration date approaches. MGM now trades at about $28.45.

Goals Progress

I count secured options income, which is income from options with no further obligations.

Total
Options Income
Secured
Options Income
This Month:
$ 33,720$     6,978
Last Month:
$ 32,671$     5,108
Difference:
$   1,049$     1,870

Adding my 2018 goal of $12,000 in secured options income to the $11,420 with which I started 2018, gives a target of $23,420. I inched a little closer by securing options income of $1,870 in July.

The road ahead remains steep, as I'll have to secure $21,550 through December to achieve my secured options income goal for 2018! Achieving the goal increasingly seems unlikely.

Thanks for reading and take care, everybody!

  1. You are doing great. Options income builds over time like any other form of compounding. Don't rush it.

    1. You're right, of course. Volatility changed in February and I had to adjust to the new reality. The fact of the matter is that I started 2018 with $20,263 in total options income, and now the tally stands at $33,720 -- which means I could deploy $13,457 more either to buy dividend-paying stocks, or to serve as collateral for selling puts.
