Options Update: November 2017

I write monthly options update articles to keep track of options trades in my DivGro portfolio. I sell covered calls on dividend growth stocks I own or secured puts on stocks I'd like to own.

Each update serves as a status report on the open options and the obligations I have. I also report on new trades and I provide a running tally of DivGro's options income to date.

While DivGro is focused on investing in dividend growth stocks, I added options trading to the mix in June 2016. My goal is to generate options income and to use the money I collect to buy more dividend growth stocks.

Through November 2017, I've collected options income totaling $20,263.

One of my 2017 goals is to earn at least $8,400 in options income. I count secured options income, which is options income without associated obligations. November was a fantastic month, as I secured options income totaling $1,336! As a result, I've achieved my 2017 goal!

Below is a snapshot showing the trades I executed in November. You can see all my options trades on a new options page that automatically updates whenever I enter new trades.

One option got assigned and I rolled forward two put options and one call option. Furthermore, one expired and I closed seven options early. Additionally, I wrote eight put contracts.

Assigned Options

When an options holder exercises an option, it is said to be assigned.

In November, one option contract I had sold got assigned:

#1012017-07-18:3×PFE 15 Dec 2017 $34.00 C $ 210.00 ( $ -2.39 )

On 8 November, the December $34 covered call options I sold against my Pfizer (PFE) shares got exercised early. The options holder exercised the options just before PFE's ex-dividend date (9 November), so I missed out on collecting December's dividend.

See this article for a complete trade summary, but the bottom line is that I netted $500.07 from my PFE options trades.

Expired Options

In November, one short put option expired:

#1132017-09-27:2×VLO 17 Nov 2017 $70.00 P $ 162.00 ( $ -0.99 )

On options expiration day, Valero Energy (VLO) closed at $82.88, well above the put option's strike price of $70. I no longer have the obligation to buy 200 VLO shares at $70 per share.

Closed Options

When an out of the money option goes further out of the money, you can close the option early and secure most of the options income.

In November, I closed the following options early and secured at least 86% of available income:

#0992017-07-18:3×GE 18 Jun 2018 $30.00 C $ 153.00 ( $ -12.21 ) → secured 92% of available income
#1102017-08-30:2×WMT 15 Dec 2017 $75.00 P $ 314.00 ( $ -7.15 ) → secured 98% of available income
#1152017-10-20:1×DIS 15 Dec 2017 $95.00 P $ 145.00 ( $ -17.59 ) → secured 88% of available income
#1002017-07-18:2×LOW 19 Jan 2018 $75.00 P $ 830.00 ( $ -113.67 ) → secured 86% of available income
#0632017-03-17:1×PG 15 Dec 2017 $90.00 C $ 492.00 ( $ -67.90 ) → secured 86% of available income

Additionally, I closed my Target (TGT) covered call options for a loss to harvest tax losses on the TGT shares I owned. Overall, though, I netted $835.73 in options income from my TGT options trades.

#0642017-03-17:1×TGT 19 Jan 2018 $65.00 C $ 93.00 ( $ -117.89 )
#0902017-06-21:2×TGT 19 Jan 2018 $65.00 C $ 76.00 ( $ -235.55 )

My plan is to reinstate my TGT position in January, hopefully near a yield of 4%. We'll see how it goes.

Rolled Options

Rolling forward options means buying back an option and selling another option with a later expiration date. You can do this to avoid options assignment for in the money options.

In November, I rolled forward three call options, one on Apple (AAPL), one on Nike (NKE), and one on VLO:

#1172017-11-17:2×AAPL 16 Feb 2018 $150.00 P $ 376.00 ( $   -1.60 )
#1112017-09-14:2×AAPL 15 Dec 2017 $135.00 P $ 203.00 ( $ -14.17 )→ #117

#1192017-11-17:3×NKE 20 Apr 2018 $50.00 P $ 208.00 ( $   -2.39 )
#0982017-07-18
:
3×NKE 19 Jan 2018 $50.00 P $ 301.00 ( $ -79.22 )→ #119

#1212017-11-17:1×VLO 18 Jan 2019 $80.00 C $ 892.00 ( $        -0.64 )
#0852017-06-16:1×VLO 15 Dec 2017 $70.00 C $ 230.00 ( $ -1,211.42 )→ #121

AAPL's recent price action provided some scope to increase the strike price of my short puts. AAPL is trading near $174 per share, 16% above the new strike price of $150.

Since October, NKE's stock price has increased by about 27%. While this price action afforded the opportunity to increase my strike price, I decided to stay with the original $50 strike price, instead just rolling forward to April expiration.

As for VLO, the stock has increased 37% since mid-August! My covered call was deep in the money and in danger of being assigned. Pushing the expiration date to January 2019 allowed me to increase the strike price to $80. VLO is trading at $88.18 per share, so the covered call remains deep in the money. The option can be exercised at any time.

New Covered Calls

Selling covered calls is a way to collect extra income on stocks you already own. I did not sell any covered calls in November.

New Put Contracts

Selling put options allows me to set the price I'm willing to pay for a stock I want to buy. In effect, I get paid while waiting for the share price to drop! I sold eight put contracts in this period:

For selling puts, I like to see a dividend boost factor of 5.00 or more unless I can buy shares at a discount of at least 10%. With a boost factor of 3.09 and a discount of 8.02%, the MO put option trade is the only one that does not meet my desired criteria.

I started 2017 with $2,512 in secured options income, so with $10,976 secured through November 2017, I've earned $8,464 in options income. This is 101% of my options income goal of $8,400 for 2017.

I'm very happy to have achieved my options income goal for 2017!

Take care everybody and thanks for reading!

I'm still a learner options trader. If you see anything you disagree with or question, please let me know in the comments below. Or if you just want to share some advice or encouragement, I'd be happy to hear from you, too!

  1. I think there is an error in the calculation of your net options income. The commission is added to the premium you are receiving. I think the commission should reduce the premium received. Otherwise, can you explain your calculation ont the web site. Thank you

    1. You're absolutely right -- in transferring from my transaction entries, I made the mistake of adding a "-" for commissions. Come to think of it, perhaps my calculator should be updated.
