Options Update: March 2018 (Part 1)

Welcome to my monthly options update article!

I write these updates to keep track of options trades in my DivGro portfolio. I sell puts on stocks I'd like to own, or covered calls on stocks in my portfolio. Sometimes, I execute more speculative options trades, too.

Each update serves as a status report on the open options and the obligations I have. I also report new trades and provide a running tally of DivGro's options income to date.

While DivGro remains focused on dividend growth investing, I added options trading in June 2016 to leverage the equity in my portfolio and to generate more income. In turn, this allows me to buy more dividend growth stocks and boost my dividend income.

My 2018 goals include a goal to secure at least $12,000 in options income. This is a challenging goal and represents an increase of about 43% over the amount I secured in 2017.

I took a few steps back in January and February when I executed some defensive trades and a few bull put spreads that "cost" me some of my previously secured options income. As a result, I'll have to secure more than $30,000 in the remaining months of 2018 to reach my options goal!

March was great and I've made up some of the losses I recorded in January and February!

This month I executed a new type of combination trade, which I'll discuss in Part 2.

The following snapshot shows the trades I executed in March. You can see all my options trades on a new options page that automatically updates whenever I enter new trades.

Assigned Options

When an options holder exercises an option, it is said to be assigned.

No options got assigned in February.

Expired Options

In March, the following put options expired:

#1412018-01-12:  6×WYNN 16 Mar 2018 $155.00 P $           0.00 ( $ -2,708.04 )
#1402018-01-12:-6×WYNN 16 Mar 2018 $160.00 P $    3,791.00 ( $        -3.14 )
#1372018-01-12:  8×JPM 16 Mar 2018 $105.00 P $           0.00 ( $    -842.23 )
#1362018-01-12:-8×JPM 16 Mar 2018 $110.00 P $    1,864.00 ( $      -10.29 )
#1352018-01-12:-3×KSS 16 Mar 2018 $55.00 P $       405.00 ( $        -0.14 )
#1312018-01-10:-3×TGT 16 Mar 2018 $60.00 P $       144.00 ( $        -1.48 )
#1262017-11-30:-2×BBT 16 Mar 2018 $50.00 P $       130.00 ( $        -0.98 )
#1182017-11-17:-2×TXN 16 Mar 2018 $85.00 P $       200.00 ( $        -0.99 )
I secured options income of $2,966.71 due to these expirations.

Two of my bull put spreads are included in the list. On options expiration day, Wynn Resorts (WYNN) closed at $184.76, well above my short and long WYNN puts. This means I maximized my income on the trade. Similarly, JPMorgan Chase (JPM) closed at $114.86 on options expiration day, so I maximized my income on the bull put spread.

Here is a summary of the other expirations:
  • Kohl's (KSS) closed at $63.13. The $55 puts expired and I don't have to buy 300 KSS shares.
  • Target (TGT) closed at $70.99. The $60 puts expired and I don't have to buy 300 TGT shares.
  • BB&T (BBT) closed at $55.04. The $50 puts expired and I don't have to buy 200 BBT shares.
  • Texas Instruments (TXN) closed at $109.97. The $85 puts expired and I don't have to buy 200 TXN shares.

Closed Options

When an out of the money option goes further out of the money, you can close the option early and secure most of the options income.

I closed the following option on Dominion Energy (D) early:

#1152017-10-20:-1×D 20 Apr 2018 $80.00 C $       253.00 ( $ -5.69 )
Doing so allowed me to capture 98% of my potential gains about a month before expiration.

Rolled Options

Rolling forward options means buying back an option and selling another option with a later expiration date. You can do this to avoid options assignment for in the money options.

I didn't roll forward any options in March.

New Covered Calls

Selling covered calls is a way to collect extra income on stocks you already own.

I didn't sell any covered calls in March.

New Put Contracts

Selling put options allows me to set the price I'm willing to pay for a stock I want to buy. In effect, I get paid while waiting for the share price to drop!

I sold the following put contracts in this period:

#1712018-03-23:-3×XLRE 18 May 2018 $29.00 P $       120.00 ( $  -0.18 )

For selling puts, I like to see a dividend boost factor of 5.00 or more unless I can buy shares at a discount of at least 10%. Four of these put option trades do not quite meet my desired criteria: BUD (2.76× and 9.26% discount),  PFE (1.43× and 7.85% discount), PFE (2.19× and 5.83% discount), and XLRE (3.56× and 4.89% discount).

Bull Put Spreads

In March, I executed one bull put spread, which involves being short one put option and long another put option with the same expiration date but with a lower strike price. The short put generates income and the long put serves as insurance in case the underlying stock's price moves down sharply.

Here is the bull put spread I executed in March:

#1632018-03-14:10×NEE 20 Apr 2018 $150.00 P $           0.00 ( $ -1,055.63 )
#1622018-03-14:-10×NEE 20 Apr 2018 $155.00 P $    2,153.00 ( $        -5.70 )breakeven is $153.91
The NextEra Energy (NEEbull put spread is $5 and the maximum profit would exceed $1,000.

Let's consider the bull put spread to see the possible outcomes. To simplify the presentation, I'm rounding premiums to cents and totals to dollars.

For 10 options, I received a net credit of $1,092, so the net premium is $1.092 ($1,120 ÷ 10 ÷ 100).
  1. Maximum profit:  NEE closes above $155 per share on 20 April and both puts expire worthless. I'll earn the net premium of $1.092 (or $1,092).
  2. Maximum loss: NEE closes below $150 per share on 20 April and both puts expire in the money. I'll realize the maximum possible loss, $5 - $1.092 = $3.908 (or $3,908).
  3. Breakeven: $155 - $1.092 = $153.91.

Options Expiring Soon

I look forward to expiring options, hopefully allowing me to secure more options income. Of course, for in the money options, I have decisions to make before the expiration date.

The following options expire next month:

Most options have small margins of safety and, along with the two in-the-money puts, I'll have to monitor these carefully as the options expiration date approaches.

Goals Progress

I count secured options income, which is income from options with no further obligations.

Total
Options Income
Secured
Options Income
This Month:
$ 30,293$    -1,676
Last Month:
$ 26,035$    -6,602
Difference:
$   4,258$     4,926

I started 2018 with $11,420 in secured options income. Adding my 2018 goal of $12,000 in secured options income makes the target $23,420.

After losing some ground in January and February, I'm happy to see some big additions in both columns this month! Given the shortfall of $1,676, I'll have to secure $25,096 throughout the rest of the year to achieve my secured options income goal for 2018!

Thanks for reading and take care, everybody!
